Our field doesn’t need any “progress” it needs sustenance and nourishment, and the only way to achieve it is through consciously collaborating amongst ourselves.
I think what bothers me the most about AI people is the assumption you alone can be a creative genius.
It’s the hint that you can do without the rest of the creatives around you. You can do it all by yourself.
You don’t need to support a mockup designer because you’re smart enough to prompt it, who needs a voice actor when you can type what you want in a box and get what you will judge as good enough for your content.
Is that hyper individualism, the confidence that you will suddenly understand the ins and outs of fashion design because your prompt looks pretty and you can now start calling yourself a fashion designer.
The isolation they cry about starts from the AI bro himself, they’re the ones escaping from the community while expecting us to understand their lack of commitment to it.
Is the assumption that we are all chasing an end goal, that somehow there needs to be a winner in the creative field, and that by chance it needs to be him, because he doesn’t need the knowledge of other designers to get things done, he can generate it all by himself. The great man who’s brought progress to the field!
That’s the pathetic part, the huge contradiction in the ethos of a lot of creatives. None of their prompting is possible without all of our stolen work put together and made available directly to them. Your story of individualistic prowess is just another disguise for mediocrity, not in the technical sense, but in your commitment to the people around you who you’ve learned from and who you’re gladly stealing valor from.
My tip to you, is just ask the people around you. I’ve tried doing 3D, I’ve been learning about typography, I practice animation every once in a while and I’ve always had the pleasure of finding creatives around me who will tell me all their secrets about their craft. It will involve practicing more, or buying assets from some other people, or helping them back with any doubts they might have.
But community demands friction, it demands that you also give back instead of only taking away. Or at least planting a damn tree for every piece of AI content you post on your feed.
An impactful or meaningful attempt in creation requires collaboration, whether indirectly where you apply the information you extracted from a peer or directly when you collaborate and complement your skills with somebody who can bring their perspective and skills.
Collaborating will allow you to keep up with the times in a far more significant way, community needs to be a priority over potential clients.
